DSC_0676Professor Ademola Abayomi Olaitan was born in 1957. He had his elementary education at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic School, Ile Ife and NUD School, Ogbomoso. The Secondary education was at the Baptist High School Ede. For the Higher School Certificate and Advanced Level Certificate (HSC/GCE A Level) he attended the School of Basic Studies of the Polytechnic Ibadan as one of the pioneer Higher School Certificate candidate. The undergraduate training as a member of the pioneer class of Dental intakes at the School of Dentistry of the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan qualified him as a Dental Surgeon. With Postgraduate training at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Kaduna he qualified as a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon having bagged the Postgraduate Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Dental Surgery (FMCDS) and the Postgraduate Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS). He had several Post Fellowship trainings and courses including Advanced Management Course at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, Topo Badagry. He is also a chartered member of the Nigeria Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administrators of Nigeria.

His surgical career started as a House Officer at the Dental Headquarters of the Oyo State Health Council Ibadan and National Youth Service with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. With a brief post Youth Service employment at the Adeoyo State Hospital, Ibadan he proceeded to the UCH, Ibadan and subsequently to the ABUTH, Kaduna for specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

On completion of the specialist training, he commenced academic career as a Lecturer 1 with the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and advanced to the post of Senior Lecturer and moved to establish the Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the National Hospital, Abuja. Subsequently, he got appointed to the Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Lagos State University College of Medicine.

Professor Olaitan has several publications, locally and internationally. He has special interests in ameloblastoma of the jaws, facial skin cancer in alobinos and management and control of facial keloids. The Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Plastic Surgery personally commended Prof Olaitan and co-authors for the high traffic of readership some of their published articles on keloid brought to the journal. In addition several local and international journals and publishers have invited and requested him as consultant and reviewer. He has served as Editorial Consultant Sub-Editor and Deputy Editor to several journals. He has been a resource person and examiner to the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons apart from supervision of projects and dissertation of many specialist doctors

He is a member of several professional associations and societies and has served on the Executive Committees of some. He was Secretary of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), ABU Teaching Hosoital chapter. He worked with others executive committee members to nurture the association to the extent that a national Vice President emerged from the chapter. As the first Secretary of the Kaduna State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) after the de-proscription of NMA in 1990, he and the other executive committee members ensure the sustainability of the young association and hosted the prestigious NMA. Annual Scientific Conference and General Delegates Meeting within two years of lifting of ban and succeeded in producing a national president from the state within four years of de-proscription. On completion of the tenure, he was appointed Assistant Secretary General, National Headquarters, Nigeria Medical Association.

As the first substantive President of the Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (NAOMS) he took the association continental and global when he was elected the first President of the African Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AfAOMS) and African Regional Representative on the Executive Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS). While holding this position, he got a Fellowship in Head and Neck Cancer of the IAOMS Foundation for one of our Nigerian colleagues and negotiated and brought Microvascular surgical training for reconstruction of maxillofacial defects and deformities to Nigeria. He was member of the New York Academy of Science (NYAS) and the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Administrative experience include headship of Hospital and University Departments, Deanship of Faculty, Chairmanship and membership of Faculty Boards of Dental Surgery of LASUCOM, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons, Chairmanship of Faculty Board of Dental Surgery of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Chairman Senate Committee on Credentials and Fellowship Awards (SCCFA) of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and member Academic Board LASUCOM. Others are membership of the Senate, Committee of Provosts, Deans and Directors (COPDD), Appointments and Promotion Committee (A&PC) of the Lagos State University (LASU). He was a member and currently Chairman of Senate, Appointments and Promotion Committee (A&PC), Finance and General Purpose (F&GP) Committee and Governing Board of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He is a Principal Officer, former College Treasurer and Vice President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Professor Olaitan is an excellent Table tennis and Chess player. He captained Baptist High School Ede in Table tennis. Apart from being the Chairman of the Kaduna State Chess Association at the Kaduna State Sports Council, he has represented Kaduna State in Chess tournament during one of the National Sports Festivals.

He was a Federal Government scholar and his biography is cited in ‘Marquis Who is Who in the World’.

He is happily married to lovely Iyabode and God blessed the marriage with children.
