Dr Opubo Benedict da Lilly-Tariah was born on the 1st of December 1958 in Jos, Nigeria. Opubo started his education at the St. Michael’s Primary School Buguma in 1965. Following the Nigerian civil war that interrupted academic activities in the then Eastern region, he had to complete the primary schooling at St James Primary School, Benin City.
In 1971, he was admitted to Government College Ughelli for secondary education. Opubo passed the West African School Certificate in 1975. After a stint of two years at the then College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, he was admitted to the University of Jos to read Medicine in 1977.
In 1984, he graduated as a medical doctor. Dr da Lilly-Tariah did the preregistration housemanship at the University of Jos Teaching hospital, Jos from 1984 to 1985. He did his National Youth Service at the National Steel Council Clinic, Kaduna from 1985 to 1986. In 1986, Dr da Lilly-Tariah started his residency training in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
The course of residency, saw him undertaking postings at UNTH, Enugu, MFU ABUTH, Kaduna, LUTH, Lagos and UCH, Ibadan. In 1992, he passed the Part II fellowship in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. In 2000, he was awarded the fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons. He was appointed a consultant in 1992 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and Lecturer I in the University of Jos.
In 1999 Dr da Lilly-Tariah transferred his services to the University of Port Harcourt. He was appointed a Consultant at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in 2000. In 2003 he was promoted a Senior lecturer and a Reader in 2006. In 2010, he was promoted Professor of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology by the University of Port Harcourt.
He has over 40 published articles in leading scientific journals. He has authored a book and written chapters in numerous books. His area of particular interest is Head and Neck surgery. Professor da Lilly-Tariah has mentored a lot of ORL surgeons and resident doctors. He is the head of the ENT Department of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. He is a supervisor for many research projects. He is an examiner at both undergraduate and postgraduate examinations. He has served as assessor for professorial appointment for many universities. He has been leader of numerous accreditation teams for both the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons in the Faculty of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology.
Professor O. B. da Lilly-Tariah has held various positions in his career. He is the immediate past College Treasurer and before then, he served two terms as the Chairman of the Faculty of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He was Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences, the Dean of Faculty of Clinical Sciences and member of several committees in University of Port Harcourt. He was a member of the Governing board of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital representing the Vice Chancellor. He has served the NMA, ARD and MDCAN in several capacities.
He is a member of the following associations: Nigerian Medical Association Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Nigeria American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgeons Opubo is an enthusiast of the games of cricket and squash racquet and loves sports in general.
He is blessed with three children.
