Professor Fatiu A. AROGUNDADE: MBBS (Lagos), MD, FMCP, FWACP, FRCP (Edin), FRCP (London), ISN Fellow

The Governing Board of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria has approved the appointment of Professor Fatiu Abiola Arogundade, FMCP as the 7th College Registrar of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria. This appointment is for a 4 year term. He succeeds Professor Owoidoho Udofia, FMCPsych whose tenure expired on Friday, June 18, 2021.
Professor Arogundade assumed office on Monday, June 21, 2021. By this appointment, he is the Chief Administrative Officer of the College who is responsible for the day-to-day Administration of the College.

Professor Fatiu Abiola Arogundade was born into the family of Chief/Mrs. SB Arogundade from Ibeju-Lekki LGA of Lagos State, Nigeria. He attended Government College Ketu, Epe Division, Lagos State, from 1978 – 1983 and also attended Baptist Academy Obanikoro Lagos from 1983-1985 for his Advanced Level Examination. He had his basic medical degree from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos between 1985 and 1990. He started his residency training at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife in 1995. He graduated in May 2001 bagging Fellowship of the National College in Physic (FMCP) with subspecialisation in Nephrology and West Africa College of Physicians in 2005.

Arogundade joined Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as Lecturer Grade 1 in 2002 and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Medicine in October, 2011. He is also an Honorary Consultant Physician/Nephrologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Nigeria (2001-Date). He had the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Fellowship training in Cairo University between 2001 & 2002 and thus became a Fellow of the ISN. He was admitted to the fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and London in 2017 and 2018 respectively. He had Doctor of Medicine by publication from the NPMCN in 2020 and also underwent a management course in the University of Washington in 2020 and was awarded a certificate in leadership and management in health.

At the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, he was Kidney Transplant coordinator and later Deputy Director Haemodialysis and Transplant Programs. He was the Chairman of Departmental accreditation committee as well as the coordinator of postgraduate programs. He was the Secretary for the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association (MDCAN) between 2005 and 2007 and served meritoriously as Chairman MDCAN, OAUTHC Chapter between 2011 and 2013, a period that fostered excellent collaboration between hospital management and the Association with tremendous growth of the Association.

Professor Arogundade has held various leadership positions at the Obafemi Awolowo University in the following capacities; Vice- Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, OAU, 2011 – 2013; Chairman, Faculty Week Planning Committee, OAU (2011 – 2013); Chairman, Faculty Journal Accreditation Committee, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, OAU,  (2011 – 2013); Chairman, Faculty Research Committee, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, OAU, (2011 – 2013) amongst others.

Professor Arogundade championed the collaboration with the University of Virginia, USA under the auspices of International Society of Nephrology (ISN), Sister Renal Centre Program and this led to capacity building in several departments of the hospital including Radiology, Anaesthesia, Biomedical Engineering, Paediatrics, Surgery, Nursing, Pathology and Nephrology. The centre is therefore internationally recognized for renal care and training having graduated from category 1 of the program. He is currently the President of Nigerian Association of Nephrology (2020-Date), President of Transplant Association of Nigeria (2019-Date) and Past Secretary/Treasurer to African Association of Nephrology.

At the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, he was the Assistant Faculty Secretary/Course coordinator, Faculty of Internal Medicine from 2009-2012, Faculty Secretary from 2012-2015, Third Senate Member from 2016-2018, Chairman and Chief Examiner of the Faculty of Internal Medicine NPMCN, 2018-2021 before his appointment as Registrar, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in June 2021.

He has served as Chairman or Member to several accreditation panels including those of NPMCN and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). He has about 100 publications in National and international journals including 7 chapters in books. He is a reviewer to several local and international journals and the Editor in Chief of Journal of Clinical Sciences as well as editorial adviser to Tropical Journal of Nephrology. He has mentored about 35 postgraduate students and supervised more than 20 fellowship dissertations.

He has served in several committees of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and he is currently a member of Educational Ambassadors committee, a Council Member of the ISN and Deputy Chair- African Regional Board of ISN.

He is married with children and his hobbies include travelling and reading.
