Innocent Chiedu IKEM is a native of Onicha-Ugbo, Delta State of Nigeria. He is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Traumatologist at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, (OAUTHC) Ile-Ife, with special interest in arthroplasty and complex trauma.
He was born on the 2nd November, 1958.
He attended the following schools:

University of Jos Medical School, Jos, Plateau State. (Premier Class)
His housemanship was done in General Hospital Maiduguri.
The mandatory National Youth Service Scheme was at Comprehensive Health Center Ikere-Ekiti. Old Ondo State.
He worked in kano state public Service, as Medical Officer
He had one-year clinical experience in National Orthopaedic Hospital Dala, Kano.

Publications
He has published well over 70 articles in both international and local peer-reviewed journals, focusing on Skeletal long bone stabilization, Bone infections, and the Diabetic foot. He played a pivotal role in the introduction of Interlocking nail system of fracture care in Nigeria.
Academic Governance
Currently, he is a Reviewer for many Journals, and an Editorial Advisory Board Member Asian Journal of Orthopaedic Research. His contribution to knowledge in management of long bone fractures is widely cited in literature, and current text books e.g. in Orthopaedic Rockwood & Green’s Fractures in Adults: 6th Edition page 398 and Skeletal Trauma: Basic Science, Management, and Reconstruction, Volume 1, reference 223, page 2440 by Bruce D. Browner, Peter G. Trafto.
Experience with Training and Examinations
He has served as a trainer and Examiner for doctors at all levels within the Faculty of Orthopaedics, and Surgery National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and West African College of Surgeons for well over 20 years. He also examines for Undergraduates, Masters, Ph.D. and MD degrees. He has mentored well over 30 candidates that have successfully concluded and defended their fellowship exit examinations.
Administrative Experience
He has served at various times as Head of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Obafemi Awolowo University and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife. He has Served as Faculty Secretary and Chairman, Faculty of Orthopaedics, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He has been board member for Faculties of Surgery, Orthopaedics and Emergency Medicine, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Service to the National Postgraduate Medical College
He has served in many standing committees of senate of the National Postgraduate Medical College, A notable example is the Ceremonies Committee, of which he was twice the Chairman under two College Presidents. During his tenure, the committee introduced significant innovations which have contributed to making the Convocation the orderly event that it is today. He has been a member of the Governing Board of National Postgraduate Medical College.

Professor Innocent Chiedu IKEM has travelled extensively within Nigeria, Africa, Europe and North America. He is married with children and his hobbies include travelling, listening to light music and reading.
