Dr. Abdullahi Ibrahim, MBBS, Dip Psych (WACP), PGDM, FMCPsych
Dr. Abdullahi Ibrahim is a distinguished Nigerian psychiatrist, medical administrator, and academic with decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, health systems leadership, and mental health advocacy. He received his early education at Government Secondary School, Gwadabawa, and Government Science Secondary School, Zuru, both in the former Sokoto State. He proceeded to Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where he obtained the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, laying a solid foundation for a career dedicated to service, scholarship, and leadership.
Driven by a passion for mental health, Dr. Ibrahim undertook specialist training at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, where he earned the Diploma in Psychiatry of the West African College of Physicians. While undergoing residency training in Psychiatry at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, he further strengthened his managerial competence by obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from Usmanu Danfodiyo University. His postgraduate medical training culminated in the award of the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPsych) in the Faculty of Psychiatry.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ibrahim has held several strategic administrative and leadership positions. He served as Chief Resident in the Department of Psychiatry. He was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist and as Head of Clinical Services and Training at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware, Sokoto. He later became the Acting Medical Director. His most notable executive role was as Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi (now Federal Teaching Hospital), a position he held from December 2010 to December 2018, during which he provided visionary leadership and institutional stability.
At the national level, Dr. Ibrahim has made outstanding contributions to postgraduate medical education and regulation. He served as a Faculty Board Member of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria from 2012 to 2016 and later as Chairman of the Faculty of Psychiatry from January 2022 to December 2025. In this role, he championed accreditation and re-accreditation of psychiatry training programmes across tertiary health institutions, significantly expanding training capacity nationwide. He introduced standard-setting processes for postgraduate examinations and coordinated multiple Training-of-Trainers programmes, initiatives that led to a marked increase in candidate enrolment. He has been an examiner in the Faculty of Psychiatry since 2012 till date. He participated in and chaired numerous accreditation panels. He has been an examiner in both Part I and II since 2012 and supervised several Part II Fellowship dissertations. He served on key College committees, including Ceremonies, Disciplinary, Doctors of Medicine, and Docimology. He was also a member of the Governing Board of the College from January 2022 to December 2025.
Dr. Ibrahim’s professional leadership extends to organized medicine and health governance. He served as Vice President and President of the Association of Resident Doctors, UDUTH (1996–1998), Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Sokoto State Branch (2004–2006), and Chairman of the Joint Union Action Group, UDUTH. He was a Board Member of the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau (2008–2012), where he chaired the Appointments, Promotions, and Disciplinary Committee. He has also served on state-level advisory bodies, including the Sokoto State Health Reform Committee and the Kebbi State Medical Advisory Council.
Clinically, Dr. Ibrahim has been instrumental in establishing psychiatric services at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, and the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, and continues to provide services at the Psychiatry Rehabilitation Centre, Jega, Kebbi State. He remains a Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist to UDUTH, Sokoto. His landmark mental health outreach initiative, launched in 2005 with Kebbi State Government support, delivers fortnightly weekend psychiatric services and free medications, significantly improving access to mental health care and bridging service gaps across the state.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Ibrahim is an entrepreneur with interests in property, hospitality, event planning, restaurants, and catering. He is well-travelled locally and internationally and is a proud father of five children.
