The Governing Board of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria has approved the appointment of Professor Owoidoho Udofia, FMCPsych as the 6th College Registrar of the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria. This appointment is for a 4 year term. He succeeds Professor Oluwole Atoyebi, FMCS whose tenure expired on Friday, June 16, 2017.
Professor Udofia assumed office on Monday, June 19, 2017. By this appointment, he is the Chief Administrative Officer of the College who is responsible for the day-to-day Administration of the College. He is responsible to the College President for the implementation of all policies laid down by the Governing Board of the College as set up by enabling law, cap N59 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (2004).
Professor Udofia was born at Afaha Ibesikpo, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar from 1969-1973. He was admitted into the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 1973 where he obtained Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BM,BCh. 1979)
He commenced Residency in Psychiatry in 1981 at NeuroPsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta. During this period, he went to Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton for One Year Abroad programme from 1984 -1985. He became a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College in 1986 and West Africa College of Physicians in 1999. He obtained Masters of Public Administration at University of Calabar in 2002.
In 1986, he took up appointment with the University of Calabar, Calabar as Lecturer 1 and became a Senior Lecturer/Senior Consultant in 1989. He rose to become an Associate Professor in 2002 and Professor of Psychiatry/Chief Consultant in 2006. He has published several scientific articles in local and International acclaimed journals on Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry, and Psychosomatic Medicine
Professor Udofia, FMCPsych has served in various administrative capacities in the University and the Teaching Hospital. He was Head, Department of Psychiatry intermittently from 1992 to 2015, Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar from 1995 to 2000 among others.
Before his appointment as the College Registrar, He served as Secretary, Faculty of Psychiatry from 1997 to 2001, Chairman, Faculty of Psychiatry and member of the Governing Board from 2004 to 2007. He was the first Chairman of the College Information Technology Committee, the second Chairman of Docimology and Evaluation Committee of Senate and currently a member of the Collegiate Committee of Senate.
Profesor Udofia is a member of many National and international medical Associations. He was Vice President of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) from 2010 to 2011 and became President of the Association from 2012 to 2013. He was President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria from 2013 to 2014. He is presently representing Central and West Africa on the Board of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA).
